When a car owner buys a new set of tires, he usually expects the perfect result: excellent grip, short braking distances, clear handling. But in reality, new tires require a certain period of adaptation. This phenomenon is often underestimated, although it is the first hundreds of kilometers that determine how long the tires will retain their properties and how safe they will be in further operation.

Running in winter tires - this is not a convention, but a real necessity. The cold season imposes special requirements, low temperatures make the rubber harder, ice, snow, reagents appear on the roads. If we add to this the factory film that covers the tread of new tires, it becomes clear why the driver experiences unusual behavior of the car in the first days after replacing the wheels.

Why is winter tire running-in necessary

During the production process, special lubricants get on the surface of the tread. They help to remove the tire from the mold, but at the same time create a thin layer that worsens the grip. It resembles a thin film that slides on the asphalt and does not allow the rubber to fully "grip" the road. That is why drivers notice that new tires sometimes brake worse than old ones, although they have a larger tread. According to various tests conducted by European driving schools, the braking distance of a car on new, but not yet run-in winter tires can be 15-20% longer.

For example, if a car stops from a speed of 50 km/h in 27 meters on regular tires, then on new, unrun-in tires it may take 32-33 meters. In a critical situation, these few meters can make the difference between a safe stop and a collision.

The new material must evenly distribute the forces that arise during movement, heating and cooling. Imagine that a new tire is a sports shoe that has just been taken out of the box: it is beautiful and high-quality, but it takes time to "sit" on your foot. Similarly, the tire must rub in to the rim, adapt to road conditions and the driver's driving style.

How long is the break-in period?

Most tire manufacturers recommend a break-in period of 300 to 500 kilometers. This time is enough to erase the factory film, "sit" the tire on the rim and let it adapt. During this period, you should refrain from exceeding the speed limit of 80-90 km/h, avoid sudden starts and sudden braking.

Statistics show that after the first 200-300 km, the braking distance of new tires is reduced by approximately 10%, and after 500 km it reaches a stable level corresponding to the declared characteristics.

The mileage should be even. If immediately after installing the tires you take the car to the highway and drive 500 km at high speed, this will not be a high-quality break-in. What is needed is a moderate driving mode, with constant stops, accelerations, maneuvers, but without extreme loads.

How to properly break-in

Proper break-in of new winter tires is a combination of a careful driving style and regular monitoring of technical parameters. First of all, you should check the tire pressure. If it is lower than recommended, the tire overheats and wears out faster. If it is higher - the tread touches the road with a smaller area, and the braking distance becomes longer. Both situations are undesirable, especially during the break-in stage.

Wheel balancing is also of great importance. New tires should rotate smoothly, without vibrations. If after installation you feel small jolts in the steering wheel or seat, you should immediately contact a tire fitting service, as incorrect balancing can damage the suspension and spoil the break-in effect.

It is best to make your first trips within the city or on roads with a flat surface. In conditions of ice or deep snow, it is better to be doubly careful, because it is during this period that the tire does not yet demonstrate its maximum capabilities.

Consequences of ignoring the break-in period

If you neglect the break-in period, the consequences can be felt in just a few weeks. Firstly, the risk of accidents increases. Tests show that on a slippery road, the difference in braking distance between run-in and unrun-in winter tires can exceed 5-7 meters. This is quite enough to collide with an obstacle.

Secondly, the likelihood of uneven wear increases. If you drive aggressively over potholes, curbs, or perform sharp maneuvers immediately after installation, the tire may receive internal microdamage that is not visible from the outside, but will affect its durability. Such defects reduce the resource by 20-30%. This means that a set designed for 4-5 seasons will have to be changed after 2-3.

Most official instructions state that the first kilometers should be covered with speed and load restrictions. If the tires are damaged during this period and the inspection reveals improper operation, the warranty case may not be recognized.
