- What speed index to choose for summer tires with mileage?

The speed index is not just a letter on the sidewall, but an engineering "seal of quality" that determines the maximum temperature at which the tire carcass does not lose strength. For new tires, the safety margin is built with a serious "overdrive". But when the tire has already survived one or two seasons, microcracks and fatigue zones in the cord fibers appear in the rubber structure. This means that the real speed endurance of a used tire is closer to the laboratory minimum than that of a new one. Choose an index that is too low and you risk overheating the sidewall during long highway driving in the summer heat. Overdo it and take too "high-speed" tires overpay, because such models usually have a stiffer frame and a more expensive rubber compound, which is not always justified in ordinary city traffic. You can find a balance if you understand how the index relates to your car, driving style and real summer temperatures in Ukraine.
On the sidewall after the size there is a two-letter or one-letter marking (for example, 205/55 R16 91V). The letter means the maximum certified speed in controlled laboratory conditions, provided the correct pressure and permissible load. Below — the most common summer indexes for passenger cars:
|
Index |
Max. speed, km/h |
Typical car class |
Note for used |
|
T |
190 |
compact, city crossover |
enough for most routes, but the reserve is minimal when fully loaded |
|
H |
210 |
C-class, station wagons |
most popular in Ukraine; moderate price-to-life ratio |
|
V |
240 |
business sedan, coupe |
stiffer frame, better handling at 130+ km/h; tread wear is slightly faster |
|
W |
270 |
powerful turbo, sports version |
high price; only advisable if you regularly drive >150 km/h |
|
Y |
300 |
sports car, high-power electric car |
premium mixture; irrational for daily use, but withstands peak temperatures |
In the technical passport and on the door pillar, the manufacturer indicates the minimum permissible index. Ukrainian legislation prohibits installing tires with an index lower than the recommended one. Higher — allowed, but the balance of load and comfort should not be ignored.
Speed index and load index — two sides of the same temperature coin. The heavier the car or the larger the luggage, the faster the cord heats up. If you plan long trips on the highway with a full passenger compartment, the V index may be more reliable than H. But if the same Golf drives empty around the city, H will be enough with a margin. For crossovers with variable loads (towing a trailer, transporting summer goods), choose a speed index at least one class higher than the minimum — this will reduce the chance of overheating during overloading.
After 30 thousand km of mileage and two years of aging, the elastic properties of the rubber compound fall by an average of 5-7%. In laboratory tests, this is equivalent to the loss of approximately one speed subclass. That is, a used tire with an index of V behaves more like a fresh model of class H+. Add another 15 thousand km of aggressive driving — and the reserve during trips of 150 km/h turns into a lottery. Therefore, when choosing used summer tires, it is advised to «compensate» wear by increasing the index by at least one step from the minimum allowed.
XL or RF indicate a reinforced carcass and a greater pressure reserve (up to 0.3 bar more than standard). In combination with a high speed index, this is useful for freight routes and cars with HBO, where the rear axle is constantly loaded. But such a tire is heavier, which slightly increases fuel consumption. In the used segment, XL tires retain their shape more often and have less sidewall waves, but it is worth checking the runout: reinforced fibers make the carcass stiffer, and therefore all impacts are transmitted more rigidly to the disk.
Look at the passport or sticker in the gas tank flap — write down the minimum allowed index. Evaluate your real driving style: average highway speed, frequency of vacations, mountain routes, towing. Add one index if you are buying tires with mileage over 20 thousand km or older than three years. Consider the load: constantly overloaded car, trunk box, HBO system — choose XL/RF or +1 more class. Compare offers: tires with index V of a new "average" can cost the same as premium H after one season - premium compound often holds the road better. Check the bench test: in "Eurowheel" each used tire spins at 20% higher than the specified speed for 20 minutes on the HOFMANN stand - only after that it goes on sale.
The factory recommended index H. The owner often drives with his family and air conditioning, the average speed is 120-130 km/h. "Eurowheel" offered two options: used Michelin Primacy 4 H (DOT 2022, 5.8 mm) and Continental PremiumContact 6 V (DOT 2021, 6.1 mm). The price difference is 1,000 ₴ per set, but Continental has a greater margin of speed endurance. After a test drive and consultation, the owner took a set of tires with the V index, maintaining comfort and gaining a margin of safety for turns up to 150 km/h when overtaking. After half a year of running, the fuel discount only from lower rolling resistance compensated for the difference in price.
All used sets are first tested on a stand at 120% of the nominal pressure and a speed one class higher than the passport value. This is followed by infrared thermography: the camera records overheating points that indicate hidden cord defects. If the temperature exceeds the norm by at least 8 °C, the tire is rejected. The results are recorded in a PDF passport, which the manager can send to the buyer via messenger. All this allows us to provide a guarantee for installation and the first 14 days of operation even for rubber with mileage.
Choosing used summer tires starts with a sober assessment of how and where you drive. If your routes are mainly city with speeds up to 110 km/h, an H index with a margin will be enough. For regular long-distance highway trips or mountain passes, it makes sense to switch to V, even if your passport allows H. Remember: used tires lose some of their high-speed resource, so the step of "plus one class" is a smart insurance against overheating. At "Eurowheel" you will be offered several options at once, each supported by bench data and advised on how to preserve the resource for the following seasons.
