Used tires — are a real way to save money, but the main safety condition — is a correct assessment of tread wear. The wrong choice can lead not only to poor handling, but also to a violation of the Traffic Rules of Ukraine. This article discusses how to check tire wear yourself, what standards should be taken into account and what to pay attention to when buying used tires.

Tire wear standards according to the Traffic Rules of Ukraine

According to paragraph 30.2.5 of the Road Traffic Rules of Ukraine, tires should not be used if:

Using tires with less tread is considered a traffic violation and may lead to administrative liability or cancellation of insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

How to check tire wear yourself: 5 ways

1. Measuring tread depth

The most accurate method is to use a special tread depth gauge or calipers. You need to measure at several points: in the center and on both sides of the tread. If the indicator is less than 3 mm, it is better not to use the tire in difficult weather conditions. Many tires have wear indicators - small protrusions in the grooves. If the tread is level with the indicator, the tire must be replaced.

2. Coin test

Take a 1 hryvnia coin and insert it vertically into the tread groove. If the crest is completely visible — the remaining less than 2 mm, the tire is unusable. This method allows for a quick assessment without tools.

3. Checking the evenness of wear

Uneven wear indicates problems with the suspension or violations of the wheel alignment angles. Such tires, even with sufficient tread depth, are better not to buy. Even wear is a sign of proper operation.

4. Inspecting for damage

Check the tire for cracks, bulges, cuts, or traces of repair. Particular attention should be paid to the sidewalls — any damage here critically reduces safety. If there are deformations of the cord or visible defects, the tire should not be purchased even with sufficient tread.

5. Checking the date of manufacture

The DOT code is indicated on the sidewall of the tire — 4 digits indicating the week and year of manufacture. For example, code 1620 means that the tire was manufactured in the 16th week of 2020. The optimal age of the tire is no more than 5-6 years. Old tires may have hidden microcracks, lose elasticity and react worse to braking.

Main criteria for choosing used tires

Criterion Recommended condition
Tread depth at least 4 mm for summer tires, 6 mm for winter tires
Age no more than 5-6 years
Even wear even throughout width
Surface no cracks, bulges, cuts
Make and model proven brands with a well-known reputation
History of use preferably from countries with good roads

Buying recommendations

Used tires can be a safe and economical alternative to new ones, provided they are carefully inspected. It is important to assess the tread depth, surface condition, age and history of operation. Compliance with traffic regulations - is not only a legal requirement, but above all a matter of road safety.
