- How to choose winter tires based on the weight of the car

The weight of the car determines what loads will fall on each tire, and if you choose the wrong option, even the most expensive rubber will not be able to provide reliability.
Any tire has its own load index. This is a conventional code that indicates the maximum weight that one wheel can withstand. If the car weighs one and a half tons, then each tire must withstand approximately 375 kg. If we are talking about a crossover weighing more than two tons, then the load on one tire increases to 500 kg or more.
When the tire is selected without taking this factor into account, it begins to overheat, deform and wear unevenly. In the worst case, the tire may burst while driving, which is especially dangerous in winter on slippery roads. Therefore, manufacturers always indicate the load index on the sidewall of the tire, and this indicator must be compared with the weight of the car.
To choose the right winter tires based on the weight of the car, you need to know the weight of the car in running order. This value is indicated in the technical passport. For example, if the weight of the car is 1600 kg, we divide it by four wheels - we get 400 kg for each tire. Then we take a small margin (10-15%) to take into account luggage, passengers and additional loads. In our case, this is approximately 440-460 kg. This means that the minimum load index for tires should be at least 87, which corresponds to 545 kg.
If the weight of the car is 2000 kg, then one tire must withstand 500-550 kg. This is a load index of 94 or higher. For SUVs and minibuses, the indices are even higher - over 100, because they often carry both people and cargo.
When winter tires do not match the weight of the car, problems begin very quickly. First, the car holds the road worse, especially on bends. Second, the braking distance increases on slippery surfaces. Third, the tires wear out many times faster, and instead of several seasons, they can only last one. Some drivers try to save money by buying tires with a lower index, but in the end they spend more, because they have to change them much earlier.
Another danger - overheating. When the tires work at the limit of their capabilities, the temperature in the contact patch with the road rises, which leads to delamination and even a tire explosion. In winter conditions, such a scenario can end in a serious accident.
Depending on the weight of the car, the type of tires you should choose also changes. For cars weighing up to 1.5 tons, standard winter models with a load index of 82-87 are suitable. For crossovers and minivans weighing 1.7-2 tons, it is better to take tires with an index from 91 to 95. For heavy SUVs and minibuses, you need tires with the designation LT (Light Truck) or C (Commercial), which have a reinforced carcass and can withstand significant loads.
These features are also important because massive cars have a higher center of gravity, which means greater risks of overturning and loss of control. Only tires designed for this weight can provide stability.
Many people choose used European tires and this is a really profitable decision, because used rubber from Europe is in excellent condition and remains safe for several more seasons. But in the case of heavy cars, you need to look especially carefully at the load index. Even if the tread is in good condition, but the index is lower than required, such a tire will not fit. Therefore, when buying, always check the marking on the sidewall.
A high-quality used set of winter tires with the correct load index can cost half the price of a new one, but will guarantee complete safety on the road. This is the best combination of economy and reliability.
