A car trailer can be a passenger trailer, a cargo trailer, or a trailer specialized for transporting boats, construction materials, or agricultural machinery. And not only its durability, but also the safety of the entire vehicle fleet depends on how correctly the tires are selected for this trailer. Trailer tires have special characteristics, and their selection requires knowledge and attention.

Features of trailer tires

Unlike passenger cars, where comfort and handling are the main things, for trailers, endurance and load capacity come to the fore. Trailer tires must withstand significant loads, because even a passenger trailer often carries hundreds of kilograms of cargo. That is why special models with reinforced carcasses are usually installed on them.

Such tires are marked C (Commercial) or LT (Light Truck), which indicates a reinforced design. They are distinguished by stiffer sidewalls, a multi-layer structure and a higher load index. Thanks to this, the rubber does not deform under weight and provides stability even when transporting goods at high speed.

Choosing rubber for a trailer by size

The first parameter is always the tire size. It can be found on the trailer itself, in the technical passport or on the manufacturer's plate. If you install wheels of a larger diameter than required, the trailer may change height, which will affect the geometry of the grip with the car. Too small tires, on the contrary, will lead to overloading the rubber and rapid wear.

The profile width and sidewall height must fully comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. Any deviations can lead to handling problems, especially if the trailer is used to transport heavy or unstable loads.

Load and speed index

A trailer tire must withstand much higher loads than a passenger tire. Therefore, the load index is one of the most important parameters. For example, if passenger tires with an index of 82 are designed for 475 kg, then a trailer often requires models with an index of 95 or higher, which can withstand more than 690 kg.

If the trailer is operated on roads where the speed reaches 100-120 km/h, it is necessary to choose tires that can withstand such loads. Using rubber with a low speed index creates a risk of overheating, delamination and even tire rupture during movement.

If the trailer is operated in winter, it is imperative to install winter tires on it. An empty trailer without proper traction can easily skid on slippery roads, creating a danger for the car and the driver.

New or used trailer tires

Many trailer owners choose used options, because the trailer is used less often than the car, and there is no point in overpaying for new rubber. This is a logical choice if you buy tires from a proven place. Used European tires have a sufficient margin of safety, even after several seasons of operation they remain reliable and durable. The main thing is to check the remaining tread, the absence of cracks, bulges and uneven wear.

A high-quality used set can cost 2-3 times cheaper than a new one, while it will last for several more years. For owners who use the trailer only occasionally, this is an ideal option.

When choosing tires for a car trailer, you should pay attention not only to the technical parameters, but also to the specifics of your own use. If the trailer is often loaded with building materials or heavy structures, it is better to choose reinforced rubber with an increased load index. If it is used mainly for light loads, you can save money and purchase standard models.
