A sealant can is a disposable or reusable device that contains a mixture of liquid polymer sealant and compressed gas (usually propane or isobutane). Its main function is to temporarily restore the tightness of a punctured car tire without removing the wheel. After use, the composition is distributed inside the tire, seals the hole and simultaneously inflates the tire to a level sufficient for further movement.
Such cans are often included in the kit of modern cars instead of a spare tire. They are used by drivers of passenger cars, crossovers, and motorcyclists, because the compactness and speed of action make the sealant indispensable on the road.
The mixture inside the can consists of polymers and fibers that quickly harden when in contact with air. When the sealant is injected into the tire, it fills the internal cavity, and the pressure pushes some of the compound out through the puncture. There, the liquid stops the air from leaking out and forms a thin, elastic “patch” from the inside. At this point, the gas from the can acts as a compressor — increasing the pressure in the wheel to the operating level.
The process takes 3 to 5 minutes, after which the car is ready to drive again. However, such a patch is not permanent — upon arrival at the service, the sealant should be washed off, and the tire should be checked and repaired in the traditional way.
1. Assess the situation. Make sure that the damage is minor — the hole does not exceed 5 mm in diameter, and the disk is not deformed. If the tire is torn or completely flat, sealant will not help.
2. Find the puncture site. Turn the wheel so that the hole is at the bottom - this will make it easier to distribute the sealant evenly.
3. Remove the cap from the valve. Prepare the can. If it comes with a hose - connect it to the valve. If the nozzle is built in - simply press the can.
4. Shake the can thoroughly. This is necessary to evenly mix the components. Without this, the sealant may come out unevenly and not seal the puncture.
5. Spray the sealant. Hold the can vertically. Press the button and release the contents until completely empty or according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually 1 can = 1 tire). The process takes 1-2 minutes.
6. Disconnect the can. If any sealant remains come out of the valve, quickly close it with the cap.
7. Drive a few hundred meters. This will help evenly distribute the sealant over the inner surface of the tire. After that, check the pressure — if necessary, pump up the wheel with a compressor or at a service station.

When choosing, pay attention to the following criteria:
After you have reached the tire fitting, you need to remove the tire and rinse it from the inside with warm water. The sealant is not harmful, but when it dries, it creates a sticky film that prevents the patch from sticking. Some services use special alcohol-based cleaning fluids to remove residues more quickly. After that, the tire can be repaired in the standard way.
Do not use the can near an open flame. Do not exceed the recommended amount of sealant — excess can disrupt the balance of the wheel. Store the can in the trunk at a temperature not exceeding +50 °C.
Do not forget to check the pressure with a pressure gauge after use. If the sealant gets on the paintwork, wash it off with water - some compounds may leave stains.
The price of a can of sealant in Ukraine ranges from 250 to 600 UAH, depending on the volume and brand. Calling a tow truck costs from 700 to 1500 UAH, and tire repair - 200-300 UAH. Thus, even a single use of the sealant justifies its cost. In addition, it takes up a minimum of space in the trunk and can be a decisive factor in an unforeseen situation.
1. How much can you drive after using the sealant?
Depending on the composition, from 30 to 100 km. Then be sure to contact a tire fitting service.
2. Can sealant be used in winter?
Yes, but you should choose special winter compounds that do not thicken at low temperatures.
3. Is sealant harmful to wheels?
No, modern compounds are neutral to metals and coatings.
4. Can the tire be repaired later with a regular patch?
Yes, but first you need to completely remove the sealant residue.
5. How long does a canister last?
On average, 3-5 years. The date is indicated on the body.
6. Will sealant help with a sidewall puncture?
No. It is effective only for tread damage with a diameter of up to 5 mm.
7. Do I need to balance the wheel after using sealant?
It is advisable, especially if you feel vibrations.
8. Is sealant safe for TPMS systems?
Not all - check the "TPMS Safe" marking.
9. Can sealant be used in tubeless and tube tires?
Yes, but in tube cases the effectiveness is lower.
10. Can I keep the can in the car in winter?
Yes, if the temperature does not drop below -20 °C.
Sealant in a can - is a compact and quick way to restore the performance of the wheel on the road. Every driver should know how to inflate a tire using a can of sealant, because this is a skill that can save in a difficult situation. Proper use, following the instructions, and timely tire fitting will make this method safe and effective.
