Summer rubber is made of a hard composite that maintains stability on warm roads, but loses elasticity when cooled below +7 °C. At a temperature of 0 °C and below, it begins to harden, losing the ability to effectively grip the surface. At this point, the main handling parameters change: braking distance increases, grip on a wet surface decreases, and even a small maneuver can end in skidding. However, in some cases, if you act wisely, you can safely get to a tire replacement point or drive for several days until the weather stabilizes.
The main reason is the composition of the rubber. In summer, tires must withstand heating up to +60 °C, so they are made of hard rubber with a minimum amount of silicone. At 0 °C, this mixture hardens, the sidewalls become stiff, the tread “glazes” and cannot repeat the unevenness of the road. This reduces the grip coefficient from 0.8-0.9 (normal) to 0.4-0.5. To understand: the grip coefficient of ice is about 0.2.
The friction coefficient changes, summer tires still hold on dry asphalt, but on wet or frozen surfaces the braking distance increases by 1.5-2 times. 1. Check the condition of the tires.

6. Plan your route.
Do not choose routes with steep climbs or descents - summer tires slip easily on slippery surfaces.
7. Do not use cruise control.
Automatics do not take into account the loss of traction and can maintain speed where you need to reduce the gas.
8. At the first opportunity - change tires.
