When the temperature of the asphalt under the sun exceeds 50 °C, microcracks in the coating expand, and rainwater is retained in the grooves longer than on a cold road. The tire has only a few milliseconds to push the liquid out of the contact patch; if the height of the grooves is less than the thickness of the water layer, a «ski» cushion is formed, which instantly nullifies lateral grip. For a tread with a depth of 8 mm at a speed of 90 km/h, the contact patch area is almost completely preserved, while for a tire with 3 mm grooves it is reduced to 40%. The steering becomes light, the car floats, and the stabilization system no longer has time to restore contact — the main reason for most summer accidents in downpours. Therefore, it is not even the legal minimum of 1.6 mm that is critical, but the practical threshold of 3.5-4 mm, after which the "water skiing" begins suddenly and without warning.
To measure aquaplaning under controlled conditions, the laboratory of the company "Eurokoleso" is equipped with a WetTrack drum 12 m long and 40 cm wide, capable of holding a uniform layer of water 5 mm thick. The tire is installed on the drive roller at an angle of 7°, gradually increasing the speed from 40 to 150 km/h. Pressure sensors in the support shaft record the loss of vertical load: when the value drops by 20%, we consider that the sliding mode has begun. For the experiment, we took five sets of 205/55 R16 tires with different residual depths: 7.5 mm (almost new), 6 mm, 4.5 mm, 3 mm, and 2 mm. All tires are pre-aligned at a pressure of 2.3 bar and warmed up to 30 °C to eliminate the effect of thermal deformations of the carcass.

The difference only seems gradual on paper. In real conditions, micro-puddles formed in the ruts create a layer of water over 6 mm, and a tire with 3 mm grooves loses contact already at 70 km/h. Considering that on most Ukrainian roads the speed limit is 90 km/h, the moment of entering the planing stage comes just when the driver considers the speed to be "civilized". The braking distance indicators show the same trend: every millimeter lost below 4.5 mm adds about 5-6 m to the complete stopping distance — This is the length of two cars, which becomes critical in a traffic jam or when suddenly going around a pothole.
At 4.5 mm, the drainage grooves still hold a solid layer of water, but the reserve is actually exhausted: in a heavy downpour on the highway, there is no speed reserve left. The transition to 3 mm is not "another season", but a compromise between the money saved and the real ability to stay in the lane. If you see the wear indicator triangle (TWI) level with the tread, summer rain will no longer "forgive" mistakes. For city trips, where speeds are lower and asphalt is sloping, the limit can be considered 3.5 mm. For the highway - at least 4 mm. It is important to regularly check the depth not only in the center, but also on the shoulders: even a slight underinflation wears out the edges faster, and the central measurement can be misleading. It is better to spend 5 minutes with a caliper than to explain to the insurer why the car turned around in a puddle on a flat road.
The company has set an internal bar: at least 6 mm for summer tires that enter the warehouse. During instant sorting, all tires undergo diagnostics on WetTrack; if the onset of aquaplaning is below 100 km/h, the kit is rejected. Additionally, an infrared camera is used to make sure that the cord temperature after three acceleration and braking cycles does not exceed 85 °C - this protects against hidden defects that are not visible to the eye. Each buyer receives a QR-passport of the tire with test results and real photos of the grooves. As a result, the customer knows not only the date of manufacture and the remaining tread, but also the same number - speedaquaplaning, which weighs a little more than the abstract "rubber in good condition". Thus, the effectiveness of a used summer tire depends not so much on age as on the real height of the grooves and how they work in water. Keep at least 4 mm for the track, check the tread at least once a month and choose sets with confirmed tests - then the elements will not turn the steering wheel into a toy. If you need additional advice or a tread test, visit ul. Saperno-Slobidska, 8 or call «Evrokoleso» - we will show the results at the stand and select wheels that can confidently cut even on «mirror» asphalt.
